Further Defining Magic
>>Do you need to speak in order to use magic?
No.
>>If not, how does someone use magic? Thoughts, body movements, etc.?
Magic is about will, and emotion, and thought. Magic is all around. Magic is All and All is Magic. Those with the knack can draw on it or gather it, shape it with ones thoughts or emotions, and release it to power the action. But the more intricate and/or powerful the action the more focus one needs. One does this through chanting, or symbols, or rituals, staves, wands, crystals, etc.
>>Does magic take the form of discrete actions or an increase in capability?
I'm not sure that I understand this question. Magic can imbue strength and/or speed. Magic can take the form of thrown fire or lightning. Literally, the only limits ones set by ones imagination. The only thing that makes magic visible are things that occur in nature. Flame is visible so fireballs are visible.
>>Do you need any objects in order to perform magic? Wand, staff, tome, crystal, etc.?
See previous question. As a side note sometimes, a magic spell can be stored in a magical object.
>>Does magic originate from within the user or from another source?
Both. Magic exists at all times. Kind of like how there's background radiation from cosmic rays. It also exists from within, our very living essence, our soul.
>>If from within, does using magic deplete some sort of energy within the user?
Magic powered by the soul is more potent but finite. When that energy runs out and depleted, the caster passes our and possibly dies.
>>If another source, from where does it originate? Animals, plants, earth, crystals, celestial bodies, deities, the air, etc.?
It exists at all times. It's in emotions, anger, love, sadness. It's in the earth, mountains, the ocean, canyons, etc.
>>Can those sources be depleted of their magic?
Yes, but it regenerates. But drawing too much can harm the area or person.
>>Is there any way to accumulate magic?
One can draw as much magic as they want but it is dangerous. There is something called burnout where one draws and holds so much magic past ones limits that there's a backlash and the ability to use magic is burned out of the user. In cases the user dies. In others the user becomes a vegetable.
>>Can the ability to use magic be inherited or is it simply a learned skill?
Anyone can use magic but there are only a certain few who have a knack or feel for it.
>>Do different fields of magic exist that focus on different aspects of the universe?
Yes, traditionally Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Evocation, Illusion, Necromancy, and Transmutation. There is a new school called Neutral.
>>Are there certain aspects of the universe that cannot be directly affected by magic? Time, death, gravity, etc.?
No at this time.
>>Are there any sensory effects created when using magic besides the intended effect? Glowing, heat, sound, etc.?
No but each manifestation can be different depending on the personality of the caster, or their teach. One user's fireball may be green when another's may be white. A user bestowed with power by a divine being may cast spells whose visual/audio may be based on that divine being.
>>Can items or living things be enchanted or imbued with magic?
Beings can be cursed and/or blessed. Items can be cursed/blessed/imbued with magic.
>>If so, what kinds of effects can those enchantments create?
It depends on the intent, anything and everything as possible. Although limitations are based on the make and material of the items.
>>Is magic a well-understood phenomenon or is it mysterious and poorly understood?
Magic is poorly understood amongst the masses. There is isn't a percentage that don't believe in it despite evidence.
>>From where in the user does magic operate? The brain, heart, bloodstream, hands, soul, mind, lungs, etc.?
The mind. Although some creatures may have magical abilities that are naturally imbued and are cast by instinct.
>>Is magic a type of life-force or something passively present in certain places?
See above answers.
>>How are those who can use magic, viewed by society? Are they feared, respected, looked down upon, etc.?
Society generally views users with healthy suspicion. They have abilities that most don't have. Only 0.6% of the population can use magic with some races being more inclined than others. Mostly they are respected than feared.
>>Is there any sort of governing body that dictates what magic is allowed or forbidden?
There are mage guilds but not one governing body... for now.
>>Have those who use magic had a special role in any society’s military during times of war or peace?
Mages have a special place in society's military, special mage task groups.
>>Are those who use magic sought after as mercenaries or assassins?
Mages are especially sought after, yes. But sometimes physical skill can make a person more dangerous than a mage-assassin or mage-mercenary. A combination of both can make a person especially deadly.
No.
